FAQ

What is a life coach?

A Life Coach is a supportive mentor who helps clients feel their best through lifestyle changes and personalized, one-on-one encouragement and accountability. A Life Coach focuses on overall lifestyle changes by helping their clients develop new skills and strategies, as well as establish new routines to support them in reaching their health goals and a better balance in all areas of their life. They take on much more of a coaching role and their clients are a part of the process working in conjunction with their support to reach their goals.

How are individual and family sessions scheduled?

1. Complementary Consultation (30 minutes).

  • Learn about what you're looking for, what has/hasn't worked in the past.
  • Share our philosophies, approaches, and areas of expertise.

2. Initial Intake Interview(s)

  • We work collaboratively to identify measurable goals related to the area(s) of life where there are desired changes.  This could be finding employment, applying/maintaining college courses, or developing a relationship.  We also discuss areas of your life where you have felt successful and areas that have frustrated you in the past.

3. First Session (~50 minutes).

  • A plan is created for achieving the goal(s) that were discussed during the initial interview. Action items that will be completed before the next session are decided and any visual supports/role plays are practiced.

4. Follow Up Session (~50 minutes).

  • Reflect on action items completed.
  • Reflect on action items not completed (and why).
  • Discuss plan for the next step or develop a new goal.

Are you certified?

Life Coaching is not a regulated field by local state agencies.  It does not have the kind of rigorous training and oversite the mental health profession has.  While there are numerous general life coaching training programs, few are relevant to the challenges that bring neurodivergent people and their families to coaching.  Still, despite the lack of state and federal oversite, our teams is held to the highest standards and are specialize in areas traditional therapists/coaches may not be able to address.

Why does HEALTHYSELF focus on autism?

Kim and Erika have been special education teachers for over 50 years combined, including almost 15 years teaching together.  They co-founded OASIS NC in 2011 and want to continue helping their students in other areas that there simply aren't enough time for in the school day, and as they transition into adulthood.  This includes improving nutrition, assistance with transitions, and expanding self-awareness.  Of course, anyone can access HEALTHYSELF health coaching services.  Autism expertise and experience is just an added perk!

What is the difference between a counselor and a life coach?

1. Counseling/Therapy

  • Focuses on the past through the present.
  • Assist with mental conditions and processing trauma.
  • Practice therapy.

2. Life Coach

  • Focuses on the present to help create the future the client desires.
  • Works to steer clients towards their basic life goals: ie getting a job, making friends, decreasing stress, eating healthy, meditating more, time management, etc.
  • Motivates clients to look at the whole lifestyle picture (lifestyle, exercise, attitude, and nutrition).
  • Cannot diagnose, medicate, test, or prescribe supplements.

Can you help with specific medical conditions?

A life coach is not a doctor, dietician, or therapist. Life coaches don't diagnose conditions, prescribe medications or recommend lower or higher doses of your current medications.  We are happy to offer recommendations and resources for our clients requiring additional medical and/or psychological services.

Why does Healthyself focus only on a WFPB diet?

In addition to obvious benefits like weight-loss, staying lean, and maintaining healthy blood sugar levels, reports from the American Dietetic Association state that whole food, plant-based diets are associated with reducing the risk of heart disease, colon and lung cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, and other diseases in the long term. Also, studies have shown that “a plant-based diet increases your metabolism. For at least 3 hours after a meal, your body will burn calories over 15% faster than bodies on meat-based diets”.

Bonus! Transitioning to a more plant-based diet is an excellent choice for the planet!
